Spooky Halloween Density Column - Halloween Science

You may have learned how to make a density column at school. But, you might not have tried this Spooky Halloween Density Column. It is specially designed for Halloween with its spooky colors. It is a great idea for you to try at Halloween.

 Safety 

1. Adult supervision.
2. Be careful of the fragile glass.
3. The oil may make the floor very slippery.

 Materials List 

• Honey
• Syrup
• Water
• Cooking oil
• Glass jar
• Dropper
• Food coloring

 Instruction 

Step 1/2 – Add black food coloring to honey and red food coloring to the water.

Step 2/2 – Add the liquids in the order of honey, corn syrup, water, cooking oil by using a dropper to load and drip. (It’s very important to both gently and slowly layer the liquid to the glass jar or the colors may mix together.)

 Troubleshooting 

Why are the colors mixed together?  
— It is probably that the water is added only too fast to create too much vibration. So please pour the water both gently and slowly.

 Scientific Description 

Density is a comparison between an object’s mass and volume. Remember P=M/V. P stands for density, M mass, and V volume.  The density of an object is determined by the substance of the object itself, usually, different substances have different densities. A substance with a low density can float in a substance with a high density. The density relationship is honey > corn syrup > water > cooking oil.

 Extensions 

1. You can add coins, dates, and table tennis to the density column to see which layer they can stay in.
